London festival nominates Iranian doc ‘Sunless Shadows’

The 2020 Open City Doc Fest in London nominates Iranian doc ‘Sunless Shadows’.

Iranian documentary ‘Sunless Shadows’ has been nominated for the Open City Award at the 2020 Open City Documentary Festival in the UK.

Directed by Mehrdad Oskouee, ‘Sunless Shadows’ is a moving documentary about the life of a group of women who are serving their sentences in a juvenile detention center.

Sentenced for the murder of a male family member, these women clarify the circumstances of the murders and even their motives.

The jury panel bestows the award to the films that present a constructive control over the subject and plot.

One other important factor that jury members focus on is the reasonable harmony between form and content.

Other nominees for the Open City Award are ‘Purple Sea’ by Amel Alzakout and Khaled Abdulwahed from Germany, ‘Intimate Distances’ by Phillip Warnell from the UK and the USA, and ‘Victoria’ by Sofie Benoot, Liesbeth De Ceulaer, and Isabelle Tollenaere from Belgium.

After being selected to open the 32nd International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam in the Netherlands and grabbing the Best Director award at the festival, ‘Sunless Shadows’ entered many international events, including the 60th Krakow Film Festival in Poland, the 17th Big Sky International Film Festival in the US, the 12th Millennium Festival in Belgium, the 18th Geneva International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights.

The Open City Documentary Festival is a space for promoting the art of creative documentary.

The event provides an opportunity for talented filmmakers who create non-fiction films.

The event is slated for September 9-15 2020.
